The Baviaanskloof area is an amazing place to ride with its rich endemic plant community, its awesome cultural heritage and it’s abundance of bird and animal life. Chances of seeing Kudu, Red Wildebeest, Springbok, Bushbuck, and Baboons while riding are pretty good. Every time I have been to the Baviaanskloof I have seen all of the above as well the Black eagle – one of South Africa’s largest birds of prey!! There are also Buffalo and Rhino in the reserve but the chances of seeing them are pretty slim ... but you never know.
The kloof is a deep twisting ravine walled between two parallel east-west mountain ranges – the Baviaanskloof and the Kouga, situated northwest of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. It is one of the last truly wild protected wilderness areas in Southern Africa and it is a privilege to be able to cycle through the ravine.
