Valley of the Baboons Tour
Length: 160km
Tour length : 5 days

The Baviaanskloof area is an amazing place to ride with its rich endemic plant community, its awesome cultural heritage and it's abundance of bird and wildlife. Chances of seeing Kudu, Red Wildebeest, Springbok, Bushbuck, and Baboons while riding are pretty good. Every time I have been to the Baviaanskloof I have seen all of the above as well the Black eagle – one of South Africa’s largest birds of prey!! There are also Buffalo and Rhino in the reserve, great care must be taken to avoid these beasts!! Back up vehicle follows closely in this area ... seeing them is a treat.

The kloof is a deep twisting ravine walled between two parallel east-west mountain ranges – the Baviaanskloof and the Kouga, situated northwest of Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape. It is one of the last truly wild and protected wilderness areas in Southern Africa. It is a privilege to be able to cycle through the mountains and the valley.

Day One - Transfers to Patensie

Mountain Biking Africa will collect you, your bike, and your luggage and transfer you to "Die Skoolhuis", situated at the start of the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve, ( 2hours from Knysna) where we will spend our first night in preparation of our first day’s riding.

Day Two - Die Skoolhuis to Zandvlakte

A fairly tough but exhilarating day. We start the day with a nice 3km climb up to Bergplaas. The views from up here are magnificent. From Bergplaas we ride through Elandsvlakte, down the other side of Bergplaas (a magnificent mountain pass) and then up another 3km climb to Grassnek. Mountains, forest, wilderness, we have it all today.

From Grassnek we ride to Doornkraal, past Geelhoutbos and eventually arrive at Zandvlakte - our overnight stop on the other side of the main reserve. The best days' riding with the most awesome views. Hot showers, cold beer, good food ... enjoy. 61km

Day Three - Zandvlakte to Makkedaatgrot

We carry on up the kloof through stunning countryside, surrounded by mountains, to a truly memorable evening. We overnight tonight in a fully equipped cave. Hot showers ( in another outside cave - best shower you'll ever have!), real flushing toilets ( also in a little cave) and very comfortable beds, in a cave, and dine on Tannie Henriette's famous Kudu and Spinach pie. ( I would eat here every day if I could!!. Food does not get better than this!). 48km

Day Four - Makkedaat to Willowmore

This is an easy day. After a short 7km climb up the Nuwekloof Pass we head off through the Karoo-veld to the little town of Willowmore for hot showers, or a nice cool swim, dinner, and back to the Knysna in the morning!! 50km

Day Five - Willowmore to Knysna

After breakfast we will transfer you back to Knysna/airport.

The tour starts and finishes in Knysna. All transfers from Knysna included. Airport transfers and collections from George Airport for day one can be arranged at request.

An awesome tour ... lets go play! Sleep when you're dead!!
